Witney U11 Boys and West Oxon U11 Girls Kwik Cricket
Last Friday The Batt boys and girls headed over to Shipton under Wychwood Cricket Club on a dark and drab morning with showers in the air. This did not dampen the spirits of the children, who were excited to compete against schools from all over West Oxfordshire.
The boys started their competition, getting off to a flyer with a 15 run win over last years champions, Tower Hill. Some big six hitting in the second game amassed a huge score of 298 that proved far too much for Madley Brook falling short by some 45 runs. A flurry of wickets in the third match against North Leigh ensured a massive difference of 100 runs. The fourth game against Our Lady of Lourdes, who had many club cricketers, seemed to push The Batt boys on further, again winning by a decent 30 run margin. This then set up a tense final game against the only other unbeaten team on the day, Witney Community Primary. The Batt, setting a score of 254, seemed a little below par for a strong batting opposition, and so it proved with Witney CP batting themselves to a score of 274. The Batt boys, taking a creditable second place in the tournament and the chance to avenge the defeat by also qualifying for the county finals in July.
The Batt girls also started off in quick fashion by beating St Johns by a hefty 22 runs. Their second and third games were much closer and after a tense 5 run win against North Leigh the action got even closer, squeezing home by the narrowest of advantages; just 2 runs against a strong Kirtlington side. They then came up against a strong Eynsham side that boasted some club cricketers and the girls succumbed to a 40 run defeat. The girls qualified for the semi-final and in a low scoring match on a tough pitch, the girls lost out to St Peter's to finish in a good third place in the tournament.
Huge congratulations to all involved in what was a great day's cricket!
