Football League v North Leigh

Football League V North Leigh

In the latest instalment of the Witney schools football league, The Batt played host in their penultimate league encounter against North Leigh, to take on the Batt side who had not conceded a goal at home all season, boasting a 100% record so far.

North Leigh kicked off and were soon playing The Batt at their own game, pressing The Batt defence high up the pitch in the opening minutes. It took The Batt five minutes to get a foothold in the game and working the wings well, Dylan soon fizzed in a cross which Charlie shot, first time only, to see it fall comfortably into the keeper’s arms. The Batt then dominated the next ten minutes and with a was it? wasn’t it? moment where nobody was sure whether the ball had crossed the line, the benefit of the doubt had to be given to the North Leigh keeper. Soon a quick break from North Leigh culminated in a fierce drive which Edward parried in The Batt goal only for North Leigh’s striker to follow up and slot home to give them a 1-0 advantage at half time.

With The Batt invigorated by their half time team talk, they came out firing on all cylinders for the second half, however North Leigh still remained a threat on the break. About five minutes in, North Leigh cleared a corner only to see it drop to Harvey who placed a shot from ten yards out, evading the keepers diving grasp to make honours even. A couple of substitutions later and with a half fit Dylan back on, he followed up from Will’s effort to give The Batt a 2-1 advantage which nearly slipped away until Harvey cleared one off the line with a header.

The game finished 2-1 in what was The Batt’s toughest challenge yet and with one game to go, things are looking well placed for progression into the semi finals. Congratulations to all and we look forward to facing West Witney next week.
